Separated At Birth?

Last year, while working an Actors & Skin edition with Nick Nolte, I watched the 1979 film North Dallas Forty. Nick's co-star in the film was country singer Mac Davis, and although I didn't really know much about Mac, southern accent, curly hair, and locker room butt scene, had me thinking he may need a FH story of his own.

When I recently went in search of images of Mac, there was something about ad above that seemed familiar.  Although they don't exactly look alike, the pose, and especially that head of brown curly hair reminded me of another blast from the past...   Now the more I compared Davis with Playgirl model Bill Cable, the more I saw they didn't really look that much alike.  But... I thought the country singer and cover boy would make an interesting and fun pair to post about.

Mac Davis: Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me

I didn't know much about country star Mac Davis before watching North Dallas Forty, but in doing a bit of research, I learned I was more familiar with him than I thought. Even though I didn't know they were Mac's, Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me and Hard to be Humble are songs anyone born in the last few decades have heard at different points of their live.

I was interested to learn Davis started as a song writer, writing for Elvis Presley.  Davis produced some of Presley's most famous songs including A Little Less Conversation, Daddy Don't Cry and the iconic, In The Ghetto.

It was also interesting to see how the singers sex appeal was central to the marketing of his music career.  Davis clearly looks great with his shirt off, and more than a few of the singers album overs include shots of Davis in tight jeans, and little else.

I was a little surprised to learned that North Dallas Forty wasn't just a one off for the country star, but it was acting that sustained his career through much of the 80's.   Davis was listed as one of 12 "Promising New Actors of 1979" by Screen World magazine and was featured on screen in several films including. The Sing II. On television Davis lead his his own variety show in the 70' and in the 80's, made guest appearances on Webster, Lois & Clark, That 70;s Show ,aThe Muppet Show. and had a recurring role on the sit-com Rodney in 2004.

Classic Playgirl: Victoriana 1974

Bill Cable
Playgirl Fantasy
Victoriana, 1974

I remember it was the mid eighties, I was about 10 or 11 years old. I was staying with my aunt for a week when my parents went to Bermuda. My aunt's husband had died a few earlier, and although she had 3 adult children, none still lived at home, so she loved having my siblings and I visit. . Before taking a bath, I was grabbing towels from my aunts bathroom closet. It was the eighties, and the closet was made with a cheap paneling type of wood.

I remember the feel of that wood for two reasons. First, I cut my finger on the scratchy wood on the bottom of the shelf while reaching for some towels. My ginger was bleeding and I had to be careful not to leave any drops of blood on the pile of Playgirls that were stuffed in the closet under those towels. In that pile was the 1974 issue with Bill Cable on the cover.

As glorious as his hairy body and magnificent penis looked inside, I think it was that shot on the cover that stayed with me. Those lips, those eyes, that hair, I was in lust for a very long time. I briefly considered hiding the issue in my suitcase, but I was sure my aunt would notice the missing magazine and I would be found out. I did however, take quite a few baths that week.

The Cable Guy

Until recently, I had only known Bill Cable as the man on the Playgirl cover. When deciding to feature Bill today, I didn't realize Bill also modeled under various other names for Cold and Athletic Model Guild. Cable, aka Stoner and Bigg John, was also featured in many underwear, swimsuit and athletic gear campaigns.

Later, Cable went on to act, maybe in part due to his relationship with Cassandra Peterson. (Elvira) Cable appeared in Peterson's Elvira's Mistress of the Dark, Pee Wee's Big Adventures and Basic Instinct. Sadly, Cable died in 1996, at just 51. Paralyzed from waist down after a motorcycle accident, Cable died from injures several months later. Although his career was short, Cable made made an impact on many women and men, and a 9 year old with that Playgirl cover in his aunt's bathroom.
